Promissory Notes
A promissory note is a legal document that binds the borrower of a loan to repay the lender. A promissory note must be signed in order for the loan to be taken and the financial aid to be initialized.
The following promissory notes are available:
- Federal Direct Subsidized & Unsubsidized Stafford Loans
- Federal Perkins Loans
- Federal Health Professionals Loans (HPSL)
- Parent Federal Direct PLUS Loans
- Graduate and Professional Federal Direct PLUS Loans
Federal Direct Subsidized & Unsubsidized Stafford Loans
To sign a master promissory note for Federal Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized Stafford Loans, the student must first review the software configuration requirements to sign the note on the MPN website.
After reviewing the software requirements, the student should do the following:
- Have their Department of Education PIN available.

Have the names, phone numbers, and addresses of two individuals to serve as references. References must:
- Be U.S. citizens
- Have known the student for at least three years

When ready, click here to sign the Master Promissory Note.
- The process will take about 30 minutes to complete, depending on the internet connection
- If unable to complete the note in one session, the MPN website will require the student to start from the beginning at the next session
Warning: Any person who knowingly makes a false statement or misrepresentation on this form will be subject to penalties which may include fines, imprisonment, or both, under the U.S. Criminal Code and 20 U.S.C. 1097.
Federal Perkins Loans
To sign the promissory note for the Federal Perkins Loan, the student should:
- Log in to AccessPlus.
- Click on "Financial Aid."
- Under "Perkins E-Note," click on "Promissory Note."
Federal Health Professionals Loans (HPSL)
To sign the promissory note for the Federal Health Professionals Loan (HPSL), the student should:
- Log in to AccessPlus.
- Click on "Financial Aid."
- Under "HPSL E-Note," click on "Promissory Note."
Parent Federal Direct PLUS Loans
To sign the promissory note for the Federal Direct PLUS Loan for Parents, the parent should:
- Have their Department of Education PIN available.
- Click here to sign the promissory note
Note: The parent may also sign a paper MPN by requesting one from the Office of Student Financial Aid. A paper MPN takes from 3-4 weeks to process, while an electronic MPN takes only 2 weeks.
Graduate and Professional Federal Direct PLUS Loans
To sign the promissory note for the Federal Direct PLUS Loan for Graduates and Professionals, the student should:
