America Reads/America Counts

Welcome!

America Reads/America Counts is a team of over 182 Iowa State students committed to improving children's reading and math knowledge. To accomplish our goal, we partner with 38 schools in central Iowa. Iowa State students assist elementary and middle schools in Story, Boone and Polk Counties.

To provide some history about our program, in 1996 President Clinton issued a challenge to have 100,000 Federal Work-Study students serve as reading tutors. This launched the America Reads program; a literacy initiative to help children gain the ability to read independently, and on grade level by the end of third grade.

In 1999 the program expanded to include America Counts, a mathematics initiative to increase the mathematical achievements of students from kindergarten through ninth grade. The Bush administration has reaffirmed their commitment to fostering literacy and mathematical achievement.

Iowa State's America Reads/America Counts program is proud that our students are engaged in the community and support our mission.

Mission

Iowa State University's America Reads/America Counts mission is to increase reading and math skills of local youth and promote college student mentoring and service to the community. This is achieved by providing local schools with trained college student reading and math partners, and enlisting the support of local teachers, administrators, parents, Iowa State faculty and staff, community volunteers and other organizations.
