Research Grants and Fellowships

D.C. Leveraging Educational Assistance Partnership Program (LEAP)
This is a grant offered to D.C. residents for education or training beyond the high school level. In order to be eligible for this grant, the applicant must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be an established D.C. resident for at least 18 months prior to filing the application for LEAP; be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien.
  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an undergraduate program in an eligible college or university on at least a half-time basis.
  • Be enrolled for a full academic year, have substantial financial need and be in good academic standing.
  • You must file a new application for LEAP every year; receipt of an award in a previous year does not automatically qualify you for an award in a subsequent year.
  • File a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and submit a photocopy of the Student Aid Report (SAR) with the LEAP application.

Federal Academic Competitive Grants (ACG)
An Academic Competitiveness Grant will provide up to $750 for the first year of undergraduate study and up to $1,300 for the second year of undergraduate study to students who are:

  • Pell Eligible
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Enrolled full-time (12 credits or more)
  • Completed a rigorous high school program, as determined by student's state of residence
  • Second year students must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0
  • The Academic Competitiveness Grant award is usually in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.

The program will be available for the first time during the 2006-07 school year for first year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2006 and for second year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2005.

Federal Sciences & mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) grant
A National SMART Grant will provide up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to students who are: New in 2006 - 2007

  • Pell Eligible
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Enrolled full-time (12 credits or more)
  • Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 in coursework required for the major
  • Enrolled in Eligible Major
  • Students are ineligible for the program at 120 credits and above as this would indicate they are in the 5th year of academic study, unless their bachelor program of study mandates more than 120 credits to obtain the degree.

Federal Pell Grant
The maximum annual award under this program for the 2008-2009 year is $4,731. All undergraduate applicants for financial aid may apply for the Federal Pell Grant by completing the FAFSA online. Refer to the federal website at www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant
An eligible undergraduate may be awarded a grant of $100 to $4,000 on the basis of financial need. A student must complete the FAFSA in order to be considered.

Iowa Grant
Exceptionally needy undergraduate Iowa residents may be eligible. These grants, available for full- and part-time students, range from $100 to $1,000 and are intended to promote access to Iowa colleges and universities. Due to limited funding, only a selected number of applicants will be assisted. A student must complete the FAFSA in order to be considered.

International Student Financial Aid
International students may contribute a small voluntary fee to this fund. These monies will be used to assist international students who have unforeseen financial emergencies. For further information, contact the Office of International Students and Scholars, Suite 3242/3248 Memorial Union.

Officer Education (ROTC) Financial Assistance Grants
All students enrolled in Advanced ROTC (third and fourth years) in the Army, Navy and Air Force programs are provided an allowance of $300 per month for up to 10 months per year. For further information, contact the appropriate ROTC department in 132 Armory.

Tuition Assistance Grant for Undergraduate Foreign Students
Undergraduate foreign students who are faced with financial hardship resulting from unforeseen circumstances may apply for this grant. The maximum award is $700 per academic year. Apply to the Office of International Students and Scholars, Suite 250/252 Memorial Union.

Vermont Student Assistance Corporation
This is a need-based grant program for Vermont residents. Additional information and applications are available at the VSAC Website. Eligibility requirements include:

  • Applicant must be a Vermont resident
  • Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis as long as funding is available.
  • Students are required to file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) in addition to filing a Vermont Grant application.
  • Students must be enrolled in a program that is eligible for the Federal Pell Grant Program.
  • Only students who are enrolled on a full-time basis (12 credits per semester or equivalent) may be eligible for a full-time Vermont Grant; students enrolled 11 credits or less may be eligible for a part-time Vermont Grant. We encourage all students to apply as if they are planning to enroll full-time if their enrollment status is undecided.
