Federal Direct Stafford Master Promissory Note

This site will enable you to electronically sign the Master Promissory Note (MPN) for either the Federal Direct Subsidized Stafford Loan or the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. You MUST sign the MPN so the loan can be finalized with Iowa State University.

IMPORTANT: Information regarding the software and configuration that you will need to complete the promissory note is available at: https://dlenote.ed.gov/empn/completenew.jsp. Please read this information carefully before beginning the electronic signature process.

To electronically sign the MPN, you must do the following:

• Have your U.S. Department of Education PIN number available. If you do not have a PIN, you can obtain one at www.pin.ed.gov.
• Have the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of two individuals to serve as references on the MPN. References should be U.S. citizens who have known you at least three years. It is acceptable to use relatives as references as long as the two references have different addresses.
• The process will take about 30 minutes to complete, depending on the speed of your computer. If you are unable to complete the process in a single session, the MPN web site will require that you start again from the beginning.
• Warning: Any person who knowingly makes a false statement or misrepresentation on this form will be subject to penalties which may include fines, imprisonment, or both, under the U.S. Criminal Code and 20 U.S.C. 1097.
